If you run a 55-gallon drum compactor on oily, greasy, or otherwise slippery waste streams, you’ve probably seen the problem firsthand: you press the waste down hard, the ram retracts, and somewhere between the bottom of the stroke and the next cycle your hold-down disk decides it’s had enough — and pops loose. What Causes Slippery Waste Compaction Springback?

Compaction springback is the tendency of waste with “memory” — paper, plastics, rags, disposable clothing, cardboard — to rebound up the drum the instant your compactor ram retracts. Our standard PAK-MORE® Hold Down Disk was engineered specifically to defeat that springback. Five locking tabs wedge against the inside wall of a 55-gallon drum and lock compacted waste in place at the lowest point of compaction. Customers report 25% to 70% more waste per drum that way.

But slippery waste compaction springback is a different animal. When your waste stream includes oil-laden cloth rags, lubricant-soaked absorbents, machining wipes, or any other oily material, those liquids transfer to the interior drum wall and leave a slick film. That film is the enemy of friction — and friction is exactly what the standard locking tabs need to hold position. The No-Slip Locking Tabs are simple, deliberate, and effective. At the factory, we apply a coarse anti-skid surface to each of the five tabs on the disk. That texture bites through the oily film on the drum’s interior wall and grips the steel underneath. Springback no longer has a path to release the disk, because the disk isn’t relying on smooth-tab-to-smooth-wall friction anymore — the tabs are mechanically keyed into the surface.

The rest of the PAK-MORE® design stays exactly the same. You place a disk on top of the compacted waste, run a compaction cycle, and at the deepest point of compression the disk locks against the drum wall. Stack a second disk on the next load and keep going until the drum is full. Most facilities use one or two disks per drum and see the same 25% to 70% volume gains they’d expect from the standard PAK-MORE® — only now on the slippery, oily waste streams that previously made those gains impossible.
